- What are GIS Services?
A web map service is a standard protocol for serving georeferenced map over the
internet that are generated by a map server using data from a GIS database.
For technical GIS users, web map services accessed from services directories
may be added to desktop GIS maps, added to your own web mapping applications,
and accessed programmatically through APIs.
NOTE: non-technical GIS users should see GIS Web Mapping Applications and ArcGIS
Online.
